  • OfficieelAfkondigingBunia, IturiDemocratic Republic of the Congo

The DRC Ministry of Public Health declares its 17th Ebola outbreak, in the Rwampara, Mongbwalu and Bunia health zones. As of 15 May a total of 246 suspected cases and 80 deaths (four among confirmed cases) are reported from those three Ituri health zones — Rwampara (six health areas affected), Mongbwalu (three) and Bunia. Uganda confirms an outbreak the same day after identifying an imported case. Case fatality in the two earlier Bundibugyo outbreaks, in Uganda in 2007 and the DRC in 2012, ranged from about 30% to 50%, and unlike Zaire ebolavirus there is no licensed vaccine or specific therapeutic for Bundibugyo virus.

WHO receives an alert on 5 May about an unknown illness with high mortality in Mongbwalu Health Zone, Ituri Province, including four health workers who died within four days. The first currently known suspected case, a health worker, had symptom onset on 24 April and died at a medical centre in Bunia. Twenty samples tested at the provincial public health laboratory in Bunia are negative for Ebola (Zaire) virus, so samples are sent to INRB in Kinshasa. By 15 May, 24 suspected cases are in isolation across the Rwampara, Mongbwalu and Bunia health zones.
