France confirms its first and only imported case on 24 June — a physician returning from a humanitarian mission in the DRC, managed in a high-containment unit and discharged recovered on 4 July. No secondary transmission occurs in France. ECDC assesses the likelihood of infection for people living in the EU/EEA as very low.

Uganda's last confirmed case is detected on 21 June, bringing the national total to 20 confirmed cases and two deaths among confirmed cases, with 18 recoveries. The final patient is discharged on 16 July, starting the 42-day countdown to an end-of-outbreak declaration.

Uganda's cumulative count reaches seven confirmed cases and one death among confirmed cases by 27 May, when the government closes the border with the DRC. Public-health measures include a nationwide discouragement of handshakes and hugs announced on 19 May, plus border screening and rapid-response teams in the western districts.

WHO upgrades the risk assessment for the DRC to 'very high' at national level. Response is complicated from the outset by insecurity in eastern DRC, community mistrust and patient flight: 18 suspected patients leave the Mongbwalu treatment centre on 23 May, and burial teams are attacked in Bunia, Katana and Mongbwalu through late May and June.

The WHO Director-General determines, following an IHR (2005) Emergency Committee consultation, that the Bundibugyo virus disease outbreak in the DRC and Uganda constitutes a Public Health Emergency of International Concern (PHEIC). It is the eighth PHEIC declared since the IHR came into force. The determination is reaffirmed on 18 August.

The DRC Ministry of Health declares its 17th Ebola outbreak since 1976. As of 15 May a total of 246 suspected cases and 80 deaths (four among confirmed cases) are reported across three Ituri health zones — Rwampara (six health areas), Mongbwalu (three health areas) and Bunia. Uganda declares its own outbreak the same day after an imported case.

Uganda declares an outbreak after confirming imported Bundibugyo virus cases. The first is a 59-year-old Congolese man admitted to a Kampala hospital on 11 May who died on 14 May; a second, unlinked imported case is confirmed on 16 May. Uganda's Central Public Health Laboratory at Wandegeya performs the confirmations. No sustained local transmission is established.

The Institut National de Recherche Biomédicale (INRB) in Kinshasa confirms eight non-Zaire filovirus cases from 13 samples, and genomic sequencing identifies Bundibugyo ebolavirus (BDBV) — the first confirmed Bundibugyo emergence since the 2012 Isiro cluster and only the fourth on record. Critically, there is no licensed vaccine and no specific therapeutic for Bundibugyo virus, unlike Zaire ebolavirus with Ervebo and mAb114/REGN-EB3.

WHO is alerted to a potential viral haemorrhagic fever outbreak in Ituri Province and dispatches a response team. Four health workers at Mongbwalu General Referral Hospital have died within four days; an earlier health worker is the first documented suspected case. Twenty-four suspected cases are in isolation across the Rwampara, Mongbwalu and Bunia health zones.
