A total of 851 patients are hospitalised in isolation and 1,548 people have recovered. Sixty-one of the DRC's 151 health zones across six provinces have now reported cases, and 85.7% of identified contacts are under follow-up. The outbreak remains active and the PHEIC remains in force.

WHO Disease Outbreak News 2026-DON616 (data to 26 August): 5,815 confirmed cases globally — 5,794 in the DRC, 20 in Uganda and one in France — with 2,788 deaths and a 48.1% case fatality ratio. Between 14 and 26 August alone the DRC reported 1,129 additional confirmed cases and 602 deaths. The outbreak has spread from 54 to 60 health zones across six of the DRC's 26 provinces since the 14 August report.

Uganda's outbreak is declared over after 42 consecutive days without a new case, and WHO certifies the declaration on 26 August. Final Ugandan toll: 20 confirmed cases, two deaths and 18 recoveries, all traceable to importation from the DRC with no sustained local transmission. Uganda enters a 90-day enhanced-surveillance period with border screening maintained.

By 21 August around 160 health workers have been infected and 43 have died, after 155 infections and 45 deaths recorded on 9 August. Insecurity continues to disrupt the response: a mob sets an ambulance alight in Aru Territory on 17 August. The epidemic is expanding exponentially across six provinces.

WHO records that the outbreak is now the second largest Ebola outbreak in history, exceeded only by the 2013–2016 West Africa epidemic. By 23 August it will have passed 5,000 confirmed cases within the first 100 days of response — the West Africa epidemic reached roughly 1,000 in the same period.

The WHO Technical Advisory Group authorises a Phase 3 clinical trial of the rVSV-ZEBOV vaccine in the DRC on 31 July, testing whether the licensed Zaire-ebolavirus vaccine offers any cross-protection against Bundibugyo. The University of Oxford had initiated a Phase 1 trial of a ChAdOx1-based Bundibugyo candidate on 24 July. Neither product is licensed for BDBV, and no specific therapeutic exists.

WHO Disease Outbreak News (data to 15 July): the DRC reports 2,124 confirmed cases and 828 deaths, a 39% case fatality ratio, with 390 recovered. Ituri accounts for 1,904 cases (89.6%) and 692 deaths (83.6%); the most affected health zones are Bunia (570 cases), Rwampara (418), Mongbwalu (347), Nizi (148) and Nyankunde (99). Health workers account for 119 confirmed cases, 61 recoveries and 36 deaths — a 30.3% case fatality ratio among infected staff.

MSF describes the epidemic as the third largest and fastest growing Ebola outbreak on record. Staff at the Bunia and Rwampara hospitals strike over unpaid wages the same week. An unusual clinical feature is compounding the response: overt bleeding occurs in only about 10% of Bundibugyo cases in 2026, so patients present without the classic haemorrhagic signs and are isolated late.
