    Germany reports two cases, both United States citizens medically evacuated from the DRC for treatment in a German high-containment unit — the first in May and a humanitarian worker who tested positive on 10 July and was evacuated on 13 July. Both are reported stable and subsequently recover. No secondary transmission occurs in Germany, and no Ebola case associated with this outbreak has been reported in the United States.

    The WHO Director-General determines, following an IHR (2005) Emergency Committee consultation, that the Bundibugyo virus disease outbreak in the DRC and Uganda constitutes a Public Health Emergency of International Concern (PHEIC). It is the eighth PHEIC declared since the IHR came into force. The determination is reaffirmed on 18 August.

    The Institut National de Recherche Biomédicale (INRB) in Kinshasa confirms eight non-Zaire filovirus cases from 13 samples, and genomic sequencing identifies Bundibugyo ebolavirus (BDBV) — the first confirmed Bundibugyo emergence since the 2012 Isiro cluster and only the fourth on record. Critically, there is no licensed vaccine and no specific therapeutic for Bundibugyo virus, unlike Zaire ebolavirus with Ervebo and mAb114/REGN-EB3.

    WHO is alerted to a potential viral haemorrhagic fever outbreak in Ituri Province and dispatches a response team. Four health workers at Mongbwalu General Referral Hospital have died within four days; an earlier health worker is the first documented suspected case. Twenty-four suspected cases are in isolation across the Rwampara, Mongbwalu and Bunia health zones.
