Kenya, 20 October: a ninth confirmed case. Announcing Nigeria's first case, WHO's Regional Office for Africa reports that Kenya has recorded nine cases, all linked to the imported first case.

Nigeria confirms its first case, imported: a woman with recent travel history to Uganda, whose symptoms began on 7 October, four days after she arrived in Nigeria, and who sought care at a private health facility in Abuja on 11 October. The laboratory confirmed Bundibugyo virus on 20 October, making Nigeria the fifth country to detect the virus since the DRC declared its outbreak; 44 contacts are being monitored and the source of her infection is under investigation.

Ituri, 19 October: 43 new confirmed cases and 25 deaths (INSP report N°158), taking the province to 7,003 cases and 3,242 deaths.

North Kivu, 19 October: 33 new confirmed cases and 15 deaths (INSP report N°158), taking the province to 2,117 cases and 1,191 deaths.

Haut-Uélé, 19 October: 6 new confirmed cases and 3 deaths (INSP report N°158), taking the province to 421 cases and 180 deaths.

INSP report N°158: in Ituri, Ervebo vaccination of frontline workers and research on the vaccine's efficacy against Bundibugyo virus are paused pending the research committee's validation, with 1,260 vaccinated to date, while the Partners, EBO-PEP and Oracle trials continue. Haut-Uélé has completed its campaign with 589 frontline workers vaccinated, North Kivu has vaccinated 472 in Beni health zone against a target of 7,105, and Bas-Uélé has received 500 doses.

INSP report N°158 (data to 19 October, dated 20 October), the latest published: the DRC stands at 9,637 confirmed cases and 4,646 deaths, a 48.2% case fatality ratio, up 85 cases and 44 deaths on the previous day, across eight provinces and 66 health zones. A total of 2,574 patients have recovered and 1,029 are in isolation.

Kenya, 18 October: 1 new confirmed case, taking Kenya to 8 cases and 1 death (ECDC). According to the Health Ministry's Director-General the patient is not a healthcare worker but a patient attendant.

INSP report N°149 lists vaccination of frontline workers in Ituri, and the study of cross-immunity against the Bundibugyo strain, as still suspended pending a supply of Ervebo from the national immunisation programme. In Haut-Uélé, 399 frontline workers have been vaccinated out of 858 pre-registered, using 399 of the 500 doses received.
