Vaccination of health-care workers with Ervebo begins on 27 August in parts of the DRC, including Kisangani in Tshopo Province. Ervebo is safe and effective against Ebola virus disease, but it is not known whether it protects against Bundibugyo virus in humans, so WHO stresses running a clinical trial of the vaccine alongside this wider use.

WHO Disease Outbreak News (data to 15 July): the DRC reports 2,124 confirmed cases, including two diagnosed there and treated in Germany, and 828 deaths, a 39% case fatality ratio. Ituri accounts for 1,904 of the cases, and health workers for 119 cases and 36 deaths.

On 15 July MSF says that in two months the epidemic has become the third largest, and fastest growing, Ebola disease outbreak on record, with rural communities still lacking adequate support. Staff at Bunia General Hospital and Rwampara General Hospital are on strike the same day over unpaid wages and working conditions. An unusual clinical feature compounds the response: bleeding occurs in only about 10% of Bundibugyo cases in 2026, so patients present without the classic haemorrhagic signs and are isolated late.

  • OfficiellaÅtgärdFrankfurt am MainGermany

German authorities notify WHO on 13 July of a laboratory-confirmed Bundibugyo case in a United States humanitarian worker who tested positive in the DRC and was medically evacuated to a university hospital in Frankfurt am Main — the second US citizen treated in Germany, after a US physician working in the DRC was evacuated in May, recovered and was discharged. WHO counts both among the DRC's confirmed cases, where they were diagnosed, so they are not counted again here. No secondary cases occur in Germany. Context row: never counted.
