Fifty-four healthcare workers have been infected with Lassa fever in Nigeria in 2026, none of them in epi week 40. Of 2,096 contacts listed, 2,016 have completed follow-up and 49 tested positive.

NCDC Director-General Jide Idris announces an Accelerated Readiness Plan for the next Lassa fever peak season, which usually runs from November to April, drawn up after an After Action Review of the 2026 response. The review found delays in seeking care, self-treatment and patients visiting several providers, continued infections among health workers, household exposure through poor sanitation, unsafe food storage and rodents, a gap between facilities' capacity on paper and in practice, and limited state ownership with delays in releasing preparedness resources. The plan targets earlier detection and reporting, prompt sample transport and testing, coordinated action around confirmed cases, treatment-centre readiness, stronger infection prevention and control in high-risk facilities through an 'IPC Ring Strategy', and the 'Turn a Community Orange' approach in high-risk communities.
